Apply for Fresh Passport

Go to passportindia.gov.in → 'New User Registration'. Use your name exactly as it should appear on passport.

Pay Fees Online

₹1,500 for 36-page / ₹2,000 for 60-page (Normal). Tatkaal: ₹3,500 / ₹4,000. Pay via SBI Gateway, Debit/Credit, UPI.

Book PSK Appointment

Schedule appointment at nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK)

Visit PSK on Appointment Date

Carry ALL original documents + 1 self-attested photocopy. Arrive 15 mins early. Biometrics captured at PSK.

Police Verification

Police verification conducted at your address. Cooperate fully — this is mandatory for normal passport.

Receive Passport

Passport dispatched via Speed Post to your registered address after police verification clearance.

Proof of Date of Birth — Birth Certificate / Aadhaar / Matriculation Certificate / Hospital Certificate

Non-ECR Category proof (if applicable) — 10th class marksheet / Educational degree
For minors: Birth certificate + passport copies of both parents
Marriage certificate (if name changed after marriage)

Is Aadhaar mandatory for passport?

Yes, Aadhaar is now mandatory for passport applications by Indian residents. NRIs and those without Aadhaar can use alternative documents.

What is Tatkaal passport?

Tatkaal is an urgent passport scheme. You get appointment within 3 days and passport in 7–15 days. Additional fee of ₹2,000 is charged over normal fee. Police verification is done post-dispatch.

Can I apply passport without visiting PSK?

No. Biometric capture (fingerprints + photo) at PSK is mandatory. However, you can fill the form online to save time at PSK.

What is ECR and non-ECR passport?

ECR (Emigration Check Required) — for those without 10th pass certificate. Non-ECR — for 10th pass and above. Non-ECR is better as no emigration clearance required for Gulf countries.

How to check passport application status?

Track at passportindia.gov.in → Track Application Status. Enter file number and DOB.

What if police verification is delayed?

Contact your nearest PSK or call 1800-258-1800. You can also follow up with local police station directly.
