Launched on 15 August 1979 as a sub-scheme of IRDP, TRYSEM aimed to train rural youth between 18-35 years from BPL families in technical and vocational skills to enable self-employment or wage employment. Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and other training bodies conducted courses in trades like repairing, tailoring, carpentry, and electronics. It was merged into SGSY in 1999 when IRDP was restructured.
