Scheme for Liberation and Rehabilitation of Scavengers (SLRS)

iAbout This Scheme

Launched in 1992 by the National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation, the SLRS aimed to liberate manual scavengers from the inhuman practice of manual scavenging and rehabilitate them through loan assistance and alternative livelihoods. It pre-dated the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act 1993. The scheme continued alongside the Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS) which replaced it in 2007.
