RRBs were amalgamated in multiple phases: from 196 banks in 2005 to 82 in 2010, then 56 in 2013, and currently 43 as of 2022. The consolidation merged same-sponsor-bank RRBs within a state to create larger, financially stronger entities while retaining focus on rural and agricultural credit. No customer accounts were affected adversely.
