The National Policy on Education 1986 (revised in 1992) under PM Rajiv Gandhi launched several landmark schemes including Navodaya Vidyalayas (1985), Operation Blackboard (1987), and Mahila Samakhya (1988). The policy framework restructured education as 10+2+3, promoted vocational education, and emphasised women's education. The NPE 1986 framework was formally superseded by the National Education Policy 2020.
