Launched in August 1995 on the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi, the Indira Mahila Yojana aimed to organise rural women at village level into Mahila Mandals (women's groups) to improve their socio-economic status. It worked through the ICDS structure using Anganwadi centres as convergence points. The scheme was eventually merged into the Kishori Shakti Yojana framework and later into SABLA.
