Launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 16 December 2005, Bharat Nirman was an umbrella time-bound infrastructure development programme with targets for rural roads, rural electrification, irrigation, drinking water, housing, and telephone connectivity. It set specific targets over 2005-09 and was renewed for 2010-14. Bharat Nirman's individual components continued as standalone schemes after 2014 under NDA's restructured programmes.
